Maxx & Unicorn Bi-Fold Wallet.

This is a short post about a wallet. But a really nice wallet, that we've loved for ages. The Maxx & Unicorn Bi-Fold wallet comes from a young Brooklyn designer who makes really interesting accessories. His carry items all have an innovative twist – with the wallets usually made from a single folded piece of leather. You can get the Bi-Fold in a large variety of colors and leather treatments, with most of them produced in pretty low runs.

Tropicana:Billboard powered by oranges
"Paris and Milan fashion weeks gave us as much knitting optimism as New York and London before them. On the continent, innovative textures dominated."
they created a billboard that harnesses the energy from oranges to illuminate a neon sign that reads "Natural Energy" & the Tropicana logo. Through several thousand spikes of copper and zink, a lot of wiring and 3 months of testing we managed to make a giant multi-cell battery powerful enough to light up a billboard. The custom build was produced by Unit9 in collaboration with director Johnny Hardstaff who created the accompanying 90second film.

"Single-family home in Vilnius. Lithuania"
This house is located in the middle of a park and affords a 360° panoramic view of the landscape. In addition to a library, several bedrooms, spacious living and dining areas, the house also has room for a Turkish bath and an extensive garden and courtyard..
Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, can look back on a vibrant history as a city on the border of countries, religions and political interests. With the construction of his family home, a developer in Vilnius has preserved a piece of medieval history. The house was built on the site of a former canon foundry dating from the Middle Ages. Demolition work and the renovation of the old walls revealed the special quality of the rare hand-made bricks, which back then were produced by local brick works. In a clear gesture of their appreciation of them, the developer and the architects in the Lithuanian firm UAB Architektu biuras G.Natkevicius completely surrounded the historical walls with a glass cube.

John led the Company through its initial institutional financing that closed in August of 2008 and, in 2009, he relinquished his senior management role in favor a more seasoned management team, but continued as a consultant into 2010. John remains a significant stockholder in IdeaPaint.

Good Ideas
"IdeaPaint turns virtually anything you can paint into a dry-erase surface and anyroom into a hub of creativity and collaboration"
When you're confined to the space of a typical whiteboard, your ideas are destined to be small. IdeaPaint turns virtually anything you can paint into a high-performance dry-erase surface, giving you the space you need to collaborate, interact and fully explore your creativity. No matter where you use it, big ideas follow.
IdeaPaint was founded by John Goscha in 2002, while John was still a student at Babson College. John came up with the "idea" of a dry-erase paint and developed IdeaPaint's first dry-erase paint product with the assistance of a third party paint and coatings laboratory.

After several years of product development and two rounds of angel financing, John invited two of his former Babson classmates, Jeff Avallon and Morgen Newman, to join him as co-founders. Jeff joined IdeaPaint in late 2006 and Morgen in early 2007. The three friends teamed together to successfully pull off the Company's 2008 commercial product launch.

"Medical Marijuana Dispensary Wins with AIA-SF"
The AIA San Francisco announced their 2011 design awardees recently, and the interior architecture recipient — a medical marijuana dispensary designed by Sand Studios .
Sand Studios, a San Francisco-based office headed up by principle Larissa Sand, designed the project for the non-profit SPARC. SPARC not only sells fairly-priced marijuana, but also baby plants and snacks. According to SFist, "Eighths come in pretty glass apothecary jars with custom designed labels, and the product is stored in wooden boxes along one wall like an old-timey apothecary. The menu and price guide are shown on hanging LCD screens." The tables, benches, and counter are all made of local oak, and the pendant lamps are made from borosilicate science glass, which is commonly used in bongs."A glass facade represents transparency, legitimacy and a sort of coming out of the closet. It lets people know we're not afraid of anything, that there's no shame in it. It's therapy for a lot of people." Very civilized, wouldn't you say?

Architecture
"Moritzburg Museum Extension"
The architects inserted the extension above the 15th century stonework of the Moritzburg Museum, providing a roof to the previously open-air top floor.

The ruins of the castle of Moritzburg, in Saxony Anhalt, have been transformed into an avant-garde museum under an aluminium roof that houses a valuable collection of twentieth-century art recovered after the Nazi pillage. The contemporary architecture mingles in this specific case with the roots of the past and is magisterially complemented in this building, a symbiosis between the avant-garde and a maximum respect for the protection of the heritage, in a constant dialogue between the new and the existence, between the singularity of the volume and the surroundings, between the container and the content.

"The Safe house"
The Safe House is a veritable cement transformer, a home with the capacity to achieve maximum security while affording the ability to open up and transform into more vulnerable states
Architecture firm KWK Promes left no security issue untouched when they designed and constructed the 6,100 sq. ft. fortress. In order to penetrate the Safe House you would need to match all the required security entrance codes. Upon entrance, one would wait in the 'safety zone', an area bordered with concrete walls, before being let inside the house. When the home is in its closed state, it is reminiscent of a large concrete Rubik's Cube. When in its open state, a draw bridge lowers, connecting the home to the indoor swimming pool, movable walls open, mobile shutters come up, and a rolling aluminum gate raises opening the home to an expanse of garden views. The entire home transforms with built in electronic engines, which means the house opens and closes with the touch of a button!

John Utzon. The Sydney Opera House

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most celebrated architectural works of the 20th century. Indeed, the building's construction defies the imagination, its revolutionary structure evoking a fantastic waterscape.
The enigmatic image it makes has come to define not only a city but a whole continent. Despite this truly remarkable architectural achievement the Danish architect Jørn Utzon, has remained in relative obscurity. This book ventures beyond its central theme of the Opera House and its construction, to examine Utzon up close, and thus the book is a welcome monograph of Utzon the architect.

By Françoise Fromonot, Christopher Thompson and Jørn Utzon. Edited by Gingko Press.

Turning a Vintage Trailer into Living Space
Matthew Hofmann from Hofmann Architecture recently completed a contemporary renovation of a vintage 1970′s Airstream trailer which currently serves as an efficient living and working space.
Matthew Hofmann: Step #1: Demo – Remove everything – along with lots of scrubbing to eliminate the wet dog smell. Step #2: Design – The creative process isn't accomplished by adding more, but by taking away what's distracting. The design questions were simply: How much does one remove? How much does one keep? Perfection isn't when there is nothing more to be added, perfection is when nothing left can be taken away. The must-do list included the use of regional materials and reusable products, such as bamboo for flooring, countertops, the table, along with a sustainable management plan. Weight was also a huge issue. Less was more. Lighter was better. And like luggage packed on an airplane, the load needed to be properly balanced.
